Syria on the brink of civil war

At the February 1 meeting of the UN Security Council, Russia and China refused to sign a draft resolution on Syria, proposed by the League of Arab States.

"Russia is not going to sign a document that justifies intervention in the internal affairs of Syria. We consider it to be tool in the hands of the UN Security Council," said Vitaly Churkin, Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN.
The League of Arab States called on the UN member states to support the bill and put an end to violence in Syria.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton called everyone's attention to the situation in Syria, saying a civil war is maturing in the country. Addressing the UN Security Council sitting, the U.S. Secretary of State urged the member states to vote for the draft resolution.

In the meantime, violence and killing continue in Syria. More than 100 died, including 40 civilians, during the clashed on January 30.
