Journalists in Armenia have to work in an atmosphere of political turmoil, chief editor of Azg daily Hakob Avetikyan said on Monday.

"The doors of information are rarely opened to our media outlets. This happens on special occasions by the order of upper echelon and the door is left open for different interpretations and obloquy," he said during a joint press conference with Mesrop Movsesyan, Director of A1+ TV Company.

The latter said ‘it is more important to know when and for whom those doors are opened in Armenia.' Mr. Movsesyan is especially concerned about the lack of pluralism in the media which shows that the filed is monopolized.

"It is acceptable to say that some news outlets are owned by oligarchs, but this isn't quite so, since the same oligarchs belong to someone higher up and it's that person who dominates the industry," he said.

Hakob Avetikyan hopes that journalists will not miss anything while covering upcoming parliamentary elections thanks to the increase in the number of social networks and websites.

The president of A1+ Company disagreed with him, saying circle.am suggests a different picture, presenting false figures which imply that these figures are distorted and confounded.

"One person gains as a result and we all know who that person is. And that single person, with the help of 12-13 leading news outlets, will dictate what will happen in this industry during the election," said Mesrop Movsesyan.
