Biography of Chairman of the RA National Assembly Samvel Nikoyan

Samvel Nikoyan was born on February 13, 1958 in Sarnaghbyur village of Ani region (modern-day Shirak province).

In 1982, he graduated from the current State University of Engineering as an engineer-mechanic and the Armenian branch of the Marxism-Leninism University under the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union in 1987.

From 1982 to 1990, he worked as engineer-constructor, senior engineer, head of department, deputy head of production and head of production unit at the hydro-equipment factory in Yerevan.

In 1995, he was deputy chief engineer at the experimental-automobile construction factory in Yerevan.

From 1995 to 1998, he was head of the department of organization at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Armenia.

From 1998 to 2001, he was deputy director of ArmPress SCJSC.

From 2001 to 2003, he was chairman of the organizational committee of the Republican Party of Armenia.

From 2003 to 2007, he was a Member of Parliament (proportional electoral order, Republican Party of Armenia).

On May 12, 2007, he was elected MP of the Republican Party of Armenia through a proportional order.
Since 2008, he has been head of the Armenian Delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

On May 18, 2009, he was elected Vice-Chairman of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia.

During the years of the Artsakh liberation struggle, he produced and delivered weapons and ammunition. He has been a member of the United National Party (UNP) that worked underground during the Soviet era and later was a member of the Republican Party of Armenia. He is currently a member of the RPA.

In 2005, he was awarded the "Andranik Ozanyan" Medal of the RA Armed Forces for his notable contribution to the development and advancement of the Armenian Army and the Medal of the RA Prime Minister in 2006.

On December 6, 2011, he was elected Chairman of the RA National Assembly.

He is married with three children.
