The Belgian government is aware of the whereabouts of its citizen Luc Wadewale who was arrested in Yerevan late on Monday, Wadewale's wife Gayane Vardanyan told A1+.

Yesterday she contacted Honorary Consul of Belgium in Armenia Grigor Badiryan who immediately sent a letter to the Kingdom of Belgium.

"On Tuesday I went to see Luc at the cell for detainees but I was told that he had been transferred to the Mashtots police station. Then we went to the Mashtots police station but officers denied that Wadawale was there. I tried to contact the Belgian Embassy to inform them about the loss of a Belgian citizen. As soon as they heard me speaking on the phone, they immediately said my husband was there, on the first floor," she said.

Luc Wadewale is charged with hooliganism under Article 258, Part 1 and 2, of the Armenian Criminal Code.

According to the police, on November 28, the couple [Luc Wadewale and Gayane Vardanyan] kicked up a row at High School N94 where their daughter studies. "They railed at teachers, disrupting the school routine," said the police. Gayane Vardanyan dismisses the information and labels it as an attempt to slander her husband.

On Wednesday, a group of activists will stage a protest in defense of the Belgian citizen outside the Mashtots police station.

Mrs. Vardanyan says her husband refused the interpreter sent by the complainant, the school principal and the police promised to provide him with a new licensed interpreter.

"Finally, Luc will be able to communicate with his attorney and understand why they have been keeping him here for two days now," she concluded.
