Armenia’s demography is at risk
Potential emigration is almost 40 percent, and according to sociologist Gevorg Poghosyan, out of the 40 percent, 15-20 percent of emigrants are youth. Poghosyan describes the amount of emigration as emptying of Armenians.
"What makes the people emigrate are the low salaries, the weak economy and unemployment," says President of the Armenian Association of Sociologists Gevorg Poghosyan.
Which youth want to live in Armenia? According to Gevorg Poghosyan's sources, those youth make up 62 percent of the society. Exactly half of them hasn't thought of or doesn't plan on starting families in Armenia.
The sociologist is also aware of the political stances of those wishing to stay in the country. According to him, 34 percent of youth are not planning on voting for any political party in the upcoming elections for the National Assembly.
"28.3 percent would cast their votes for the Republican Party of Armenia, 18 percent would vote for Prosperous Armenia Party, 6 percent would vote for the ARF-Dashnaktsutiun, the ANC and the other parties," the sociologist says, adding that this distribution of votes is paradoxical since "the people are very discontent".
Gevorg Poghosyan says the high percentage of votes for the ruling party is due to the youth's hope that the situation won't get worse. Out of the 1,065 youth, only 400 say they are determined to have two or three children, and according to the sociologist, Armenia's demography is at risk.
