The Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has responded to the opposition Heritage party leader, Raffi Hovhannisyan's call for urgent measures to ensure free and fair elections in Armenia.

In a public letter to Serzh Sargsyan, Raffi Hovannisian called on the president of Armenia and all government officials to resign from the boards of educational institutions in the name of free and fair elections.

"Declarative statements or populist slogans should not serve as tools for putting the actual political will under question," RPA Spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov said in reply.

"The Republican Party of Armenia hails constructive and impartial approach to electoral processes proposed by any political force and praises any justified proposal aimed at their enhancement. The initiatives that propose reforms should have a positive trend and exclude subjective perceptions of separate phenomena since it is not fair to put subjective assessments on the basis of revealing the conformity of political and legal processes," he said.

Adoption of the new Electoral Code is one of the key steps towards promoting free and fair elections.

The vast majority of the questions raised in the letter received their solution thanks to the new code and may become more substantial and measurable in the election period. In this respect, declarative statements or populist slogans should not question the process of exercising a political will.

It is necessary to refrain from attempts to make exaggerated statements on the ruling political force's obligations as they have reasonable limits and should never serve as a pretext for restricting the rights and freedoms. Any state must aspire for flawless elections. And any violation in the electoral processes shall receive an equivalent assessment," said Eduard Sharmazanov.
