FM: “We’ll see”
Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan today touched upon Azerbaijan joining the UN Security Council as a non-permanent member. Nalbandyan was at the National Assembly to participate in the discussions on the state budget.
"I really don't think that integration should lead to a great reaction. As far as moving the Karabakh conflict to the Security Council is concerned, I would like to remind you that Russia, the United States and France, which are the three Minsk Group Co-Chairing countries and SC permanent members, have declared several times that the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict should be settled within the framework of the Minsk Group and not be moved to other platforms. I think the answer is clear and there is no need to get emotional over Azerbaijan's declarations," the minister said.
According to him, Azerbaijan has placed itself in a labyrinth. "The international community has already expressed its position, which falls in line with Armenia's position. I wouldn't say it falls in line with Azerbaijan's views; otherwise, it wouldn't have been rejected. Perhaps Azerbaijan will show a more serious and constructive approach after becoming an SC non-permanent member," the minister asked a rhetoric question.
"We'll see. I highly doubt it. According to Article 23 of the UN Charter, the member of the Security Council should make a contribution to the maintenance of international security. Will Azerbaijan be able to stop making belligerent statements, calls for war and declarations that instill racial discrimination and hostility? I highly doubt it. We'll see.
We shouldn't get emotional and say Azerbaijan got something out of this and Armenia suffered great losses. Armenia will continue its consistent, balanced policy without any convulsions. We will continue to take steps for the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict resolution, as well as the strengthening of stability and security in our region in general."
