Azerbaijan: member of the UN Security Council
Azerbaijan has been elected a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council, making it an important event in the country's history.
Before a decisive vote of the UN General Forum on October 25, the other candidate for the 10th non-permanent member of the SC, Foreign Minister of Slovenia announced that Slovenia was removing its candidacy. Before that, Azerbaijan had garnered 116 votes, while Slovenia had garnered 77.
Until then, through secret votes the two countries weren't able to garner the 2/3 of votes of UN-member states.
The non-permanent members of the UN Security Council change once every two years. Unlike the 5 permanent members of the SC, including the United States, Great Britain, China, Russia and France, they don't have the right to a veto.
