Resolution to establish peace?
UK Ambassadors to the South Caucasus have welcomed the UN Resolution on "The Creation of a Peaceful and Happier World through the Ideals of Sports and Olympics".
The resolution was introduced to the UN General Assembly by the UK, which will be hosting the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The resolution was unanimously adopted on 17 October 2011 in New York.
In ancient Rome, the Olympic Games signaled the start of the period of peace that gave competitors and others the opportunity to travel safely. In 1992, the World Olympic Committee brought up the idea of using sports to promote the ideals of the Olympics and support peace-building and the solution of conflicts. Similar resolutions have been adopted before each Summer and Winter Olympics. The resolution refers not only to respecting the ceasefire during the Olympics and Paralympics, but all efforts for peaceful settlement of global conflicts through sports and the accomplishment of the Millennium Development Goals.
