Vladimir Karapetyan, a senior member of the opposition Armenian National Congress (HAK), says German Ambassador to Armenia Hans-Jochen Schmidt "gave a slap to the HAK," when speaking about past events during yesterday's discussion at the Civilitas Foundation, but he cannot account for Schmidt's behavior.

"Ambassador Hans-Jochen Schmidt referred to the events that happened more than 15-17 years ago. Perhaps he has heard them from others," said the member of HAK's Foreign Relations Committee.

Karapetyan says he has not had a chance to personally inform the German Ambassador of the rigged elections in Armenia but he assumes that the ambassador should be aware of everything.

"He sees everything with his own eyes. He works and lives in this country and must be aware of everything. If not, I feel pity for him," said Karapetyan, at the same time welcoming the German ambassador's participation in HAK's rallies.

"Rallies are important political events and he [Hans-Jochen Schmidt] is obliged to report German authorities on them," said the HAK member.

Hans-Jochen Schmidt announced yesterday that the terms "oligopoly" and "oligarchy" came into circulation during Levon Ter-Petrosyan's tenure in office. He went further saying that elections were first rigged in Armenia during Ter-Petrosyan's administration.

"Even people were thrown into prison in those years," the Germany Ambassador said when assessing the path passed by independent Armenia.
