96 applications submitted for TEC membership
Forty-one Territorial Election Commissions (TEC) will be formed in Armenia from August 1 to 15, member of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Tatev Ohanyan told A1+.
Ninety-six applications have been submitted with the CEC to this date. In the near future, the CEC will convene a sitting to discuss the applications.
Under Article 37 of the Armenian Electoral Code, a TEC member must not be affiliated with a political party.
"After his appointment as a TEC member, the person in question must quit his party and become nonpartisan," Ohanyan stressed.
By law, MPs, judges, prosecutors, ministers, marzpets (regional governors), members of the Council of Elders, employees of Police and National Security Service cannot be appointed TEC members.
Tatev Ohanyan says the same person can apply for a few constituencies at a time. Besides, several applications can be submitted for the same constituency.
Each TEC will be comprised of seven members who will be elected for seven years' term.
A1+ tried to find out whether political parties are going to name their candidates for TECs.
Spokesman for the Heritage party, Hovsep Khurshudyan said the party is not going to nominate a candidate since they find it futile and pointless.
"Applications are submitted spontaneously. We abstain from engaging in the TECs in this way," he said.
