Five children’s trafficking cases
Children attending special care institutions were more aware than the children attending public schools.
This is what Project Director of the People in Need Armenia branch Tatevik Bezhanyan said as she presented the summary of the two-year program "Children's Trafficking and Exploitation in Armenia".
"This study showed that only 1.8 percent of Armenian society is aware of trafficking," said Tatevik Bezhanyan.
The targets of the main study were 800 children attending public and special schools, night and daycare centers and orphanages.
The investigation stage of the program was followed by an awareness stage that included trainings for teachers of 9th-11th grades in 357 schools nationwide.
"There is a problem with prevention. We are trying to inform children and teachers that there may be such threats in the future," said RA Deputy Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Filaret Berikyan.
Within the framework of the program, social workers have supported wandering children on the streets in Yerevan and Gyumri. The European Union provided over 400,000 Euros for program implementation.
According to official data, there have only been five trafficking cases in Armenia, including two sexual abuse cases and three begging cases.
