Aram Harutyunyan predicts changes in Armenian National Congress
Contradictions may soon emerge between Armenia's first President Levon Ter-Petrosyan and amnestied opposition loyalist Nikol Pashinyan, Leader of the National Concord Party Aram Harutyunyan said on Wednesday.
"The Armenian National Congress may soon feel the urgency of changing its leader," Harutyunyan told A1+.
He thinks that Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan is brokering reconciliation between the authorities and opposition; otherwise the opposition would continue to demand the government's resignation.
"The recent amnesty that led to the release of ANC loyalists imprisoned after the March 1, 2008 tragic events was a positive, though belated decision. The amnesty should not be viewed as the opposition's victory, or the authorities' mercy," said the leader of the National Concord Party.
Aram Harutyunyan ruled out snap elections in the country in the nearest future.
Leader of the Ramkavar Azatakan (Liberal-Democratic) Party Edward Antinyan agreed with him saying that there are no prerequisites for early elections.
"Snap elections are called in force majeure situations which was the case in Arab states," he said.
Speaking about the interior political developments, Antinyan said, "The authorities do not need to use all the building material to erect a fortress and to protect themselves -a thing they have been doing for three years."
He says the opposition has failed to keep its pledge since it promised to carry out a velvet revolution without bloodshed and major shocks.
