The general amnesty was granted thanks to journalists and authorities, Head of Republican faction Galust Sahakyan said on Friday.

"People believe that the amnesty will open doors to angles but amnesty should be viewed in a different context," Sahakyan said during today's parliamentary briefing.

According to the Republican representative, the amnesty is based on the idea of independence.

"Independence is the most important tool for Armenia and its people, and we must all struggle for it. Independence forgives all wrongdoers and enables them to correct themselves. Amnesty aims to eradicate evil phenomena in the society," said Galust Sahakyan.

Speaking about the possibility of continuing the dialogue with the opposition after the release of the political prisoners, Sahakyan said, "I do not spend my days dreaming about the dialogue."

ARF-Dashnaktsutyun MP Artsvik Minasyan says the amnesty has a political subtext.

"The amnesty of 2009 was not complete. Two years ago Dashnaktsutyun called for a broader amnesty which would mitigate the existing political situation. This amnesty came to address the drawbacks of the previous one," said Minasyan.

The Armenian parliament approved on Wednesday President Serzh Sarkisian's initiative to declare a general amnesty that will lead to the release of opposition loyalists controversially imprisoned following a disputed presidential election held in February 2008.
