Tanks used against protesters in Syria
Syrian troops backed by tanks are advancing in residential areas in the country's third largest city, Homs, shooting into homes and people.
Snipers deployed in several residential neighborhoods as the sound of gunfire died down in districts of the city that tanks stormed on Sunday. The city is deprived of water and electricity.
Desperate citizens resist police and security forces using fowling piece.
The troops are also advancing in the southern city of Daraa. President Bashar Assad has dispatched army troops backed by tanks to a cluster of villages near the city where the uprising against the regime began in mid-March.
Despite the tough crackdown on demonstrators, Syrian authorities say that they do not exert pressure on peaceful residents.
The European Union agreed on Tuesday to impose sanctions against Syria for its brutal repression on anti-government protesters. The measures include a travel ban and asset freeze on members of President Bashar al-Assad's regime considered responsible for the crackdown.
