A former vice-speaker of the Armenian parliament says a new situation has emerged in Armenia which presupposes new developments.

"However, everything seems very gloomy. I wish all political prisoners were in freedom," said Karapet Rubinyan.

"Few are informed of the genuine situation in the country. They [authorities] say that they are holding an open dialogue with the opposition but no one knows the final goal," he told A1+.

Rubinyan does not think that Serzh Sargsyan will agree to resign office at the end of the dialogue.

"Obviously, the sides have decided to make compromises which is perceived positively or negatively by each of us. I am personally convinced that the sooner we topple the illegitimate authorities, the earlier we will be able to make drastic and effective changes in the country," he said.

Regarding the possible release of the political prisoners before May 31, Rubinyan said he shares the opinion of opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan.

"During the opposition's previous rally Levon Ter-Petrosyan said the political prisoners would be freed before May 31. I think that Ter-Petrosyan had weighty grounds to make such a statement. The current processes make me believe that they the political prisoners will be freed by then," he said.

Karapet Rubinyan says Armenia has appeared in a grave situation and is losing both in internal and external affairs. Though Rubinyan is for drastic changes, he says that velvet changes will also yield fruitful results.
