On April 26, the world marks a quarter century since the worst nuclear accident in history at Chernobyl in Ukraine.

"The events dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster prove that the Armenian people remember and appreciate their heroes and try to assist them in treatment and recovery," Serzh Sargsyan said in a message addressed to the working group dealing with the elimination of consequences of the Chernobyl accident.

"Exactly 25 years ago, one of the biggest energetic tragedies took place in Chernobyl, Ukraine. Many Armenians rushed to help Ukrainians to overcome the consequences of the disaster. Today we bow our heads before those who hurried to hold a hand to the Ukrainian people and didn't return from the battleground of struggle against the consequences of the disaster. We also bow down to those who lived through the fierce battle and, despite the serious damage to their health, today continue to prove the boundless will of the Armenian people to live on," reads the message.

A nuclear accident occurred on 26 April 1986 at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine. An explosion and fire released large quantities of radioactive contamination into the atmosphere, which spread over much of Western Russia and Europe. It is considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history. The level of contamination was ten times greater than the fallout from the atomic bombs dropped on Japanese cities Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
