Attractions removed from Liberty Square
Children's rides and attractions have been removed from Yerevan's Liberty Square - the key site for opposition's rallies which turned into a construction site after the deadly post-election clashes of March 1, 2008. The square was closed for nearly a year because of the construction of a huge underground parking garage.
The square was reopened in May, 2010, and immediately it turned into a family playground with different attractions.
Today one could see people strolling in the square and enjoying themselves.
"Liberty Square, a symbol of democracy and freedom, finally restored its image," Diaspora representative Avetis, 45, told A1 +.
A1+'s journalist met the head of Kentron district Gagik Gyanjumyan in the square and inquired about the unexpected changes.
"The Municipality has decided to clean the square and provide space for our citizens. Besides, new cultural events are planned to be carried out on the grounds," said Gyanjumyan.
Asked whether the city authorities are preparing for the opposition's upcoming rally, Gagik Gyanjumyan said, "You had better address the question to the opposition."
Currently, a concert is underway in the square.
After the square was opened to public in 2010, the opposition Armenian National Congress has submitted numerous requests to the Mayor's Office to hold a rally in Liberty Square.
The municipality rejects the bid, saying the square was busy and assigned to another event on that day and suggesting the opposition gather at some other place.
