Need for radical reform
"The only way to reach democracy is by having a developing civil society," says U.S. Ambassador to Armenia Marie Yovanovich who participated in the presentation of the "Civil Society Index: Armenia" analytical report prepared by Counterpart International Armenia Office.
Attaching importance to the development of civil society in Armenia, Yovanovich noted that the participation of civil society in processes is at a very low level in Armenia. According to her, civil society and the government must work together for efficiency.
"Civil society is developing in Armenia, but it still faces great challenges," says Head of Counterpart International Armenia Office Alex Sardar.
Alex Sardar added that the issue of the NGOs' financial stability must be specified in order for them not to be solely dependent on sources from abroad.
"They should be permitted to procure means in Armenia, even from the government in order to implement their activities for the public," said Sardar.
Alex Sardar says there is a need for radical reform.
