For the first time ever, Armenia participated in the World Ice Sculptures Festival held in the Canadian cities of Edmonton and Lake Luis in January. Sculptor Hayk Tokmajyan and his brother from Canada submitted an application to represent Armenia at the festival and were among the 9 participants selected from different countries.

According to Hayk Tokmajyan, he has always dreamed of portraying a carousel in his works and go back to his childhood days even at a mature age.

"I didn't expect that sculpture to be made from ice. It was a different approach, a different world and a different path," Hayk Tokmajyan told "A1+".

The artist says the difference was very interesting and difficult since he was working with ice for the first time. The brothers Tokmajyan worked for 3 days and the temperature was 30 degrees.

"We wanted to take our clothes off, but we couldn't because it was cold. There was no other way. You simply had to be there to see the result," says the sculptor.

In Lake Luis, the participants were assigned to create a sculpture with the theme "Mad World". What the sculptor didn't understand was that most participants expressed madness in the form of a dragon and the devil. Hayk Tokmajyan called his sculpture Tsovinar.

The brothers Tokmajyan won the encouraging third place at the ice sculptures festival and, as Hayk Tokmajyan says, working with ice has changed his way of thinking about composition.

"The shiny, transparent substance of ice has some impact on my work and only time will show what that impact is," added Hayk, Tokmajyan.
