January 28 marks Data Protection Day.

In 1981, the Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data was negotiated within the Council of Europe. This convention obliges the signatories to enact legislation concerning the automatic processing of personal data, which many duly did.

The Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data extended the safeguards for everyone's rights and fundamental freedoms, and in particular the right to the respect for privacy, taking account of the increasing flow across frontiers of personal data undergoing automatic processing.

Convention reads that appropriate security measures shall be taken for the protection of personal data stored in automated data files against accidental or unauthorised destruction or accidental loss as well as against unauthorised access, alteration or dissemination.

Forty-five CoE member countries have acceded to the Convention.

The Republic of Armenia will join the document in the near future.
