Stepan Demirtchyan: “Armenia has had no progress”
2010 was not a year of achievements, People's Party of Armenia (HZhK) Stepan Demirchyan told a press conference on December 24.
"The negative tends continue to deepen. 65 000 Armenians have left the country in the last nine months. 1 100 000 people live in abject poverty. Opposition activists are kept in prisons. The country faces political, socio-economic and psychological crisis," said Stepan Demirtchyan adding that the current image is the result of longstanding controversial policy.
To come out of the sorrowful situation, Demirtchyan suggests conducting free and fair elections in the country although he thinks it is unrealistic to hope for an improvement during the next elections.
The HZhK leader explains Armenia's defeat in foreign policy by unfavouarble developments in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
"Armenia should do everything for Karabakh to become a negotiating party," he said.
Speaking about the future steps of the Armenian National Congress, the HZhK leader said that the opposition should unite before the parliamentary elections of 2012.
"Serzh Sargsyan's speech was an attempt to win public confidence but I think that it was belated," said Mr. Demirtchyan.
Regarding the results of recent broadcasting competitions, the HZhK leader said that the closure of A1+, ALM and Gala TV companies was predetermined.
