Denial leads to new crimes
"The background of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide adopted on 9 December 1948 is connected to the most tragic page in Armenian history," said RA Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandyan during the international conference on "The crime of genocide: prevention, condemnation and elimination of consequences."
Nalbandyan said it was the lack of condemnation of the Armenian Genocide and the elimination of consequences that in 1921 led young philologist Rafael Lemkin to ask his professor why the Armenians weren't calling for the arrest of the perpetrators of the Armenian Genocide.
"Denial of genocides and impunity pave the way for perpetration of new crimes against humanity. Regardless of geopolitical or other interests, the international community must be united as one in the condemnation and prevention of genocides. It is the lack of this unity why humanity is witnessing new attempts of genocide," said Edward Nalbandyan and said the international conference is symbolic.
Participating in the international conference are notable scientists and experts from France, Argentina, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Ireland, Hungary, the United States, Canada, Australia, Lebanon, Egypt, Israel and Japan.
