On December 13, Yerevan Elders' Council held an extraordinary sitting to set the date for Yerevan mayor's elections.

By a decision of the Elders' Council, the election is scheduled for December 17.

Yerevan Mayor Gagik Beglaryan resigned office on December 8. The decision was prompted by the incident between the Mayor and employee of the presidential staff's protocol department Aram Kandayan.

The incident between the two men sparked after Kandayan asked Beglaryan's wife to change her seat at Yerevan-hosted concert of Spanish tenor Placido Domingo on December 3. Beglaryan's spouse and her friend took seats next to Armenian president, which, according to the protocol, are meant for the Catholicos of All Armenians, Parliamentary Speaker and Armenia's Prime Minister.

However, Mrs. Beglaryan, outraged by the request, complained about it to her husband, who, in turn, decided to square accounts with Kandayan. The ex mayor reportedly kidnapped and beat Kandayan.
