Authorities try “to close a deal” with Europeans
The Armenian National Congress (HAK) will hold a six-hour piquet in downtown Yerevan (in the neighborhood of Yerevan hotel) on November 9, HAK coordinator Levon Zurabyan told reporters on November 4.
The same day, Yerevan hotel will host a discussion devoted to EU-Armenia relations.
Zurabyan pointed out that the opposition had decided to address human rights at the rally, but other issues were later put on the agenda.
"The ring round the ruling regime is getting tighter," said the HAK coordinator pointing out four reasons: the worsening socio-economic situation in Armenia, the mounting pressure by the Council of Europe, the dissolution of American and Russian criminal groups formed and sponsored by Armenia's incumbent authorities and finally international community's increasing pressure on the conflicting sides to reach progress in the resolution of the Karabakh conflict.
"Analyzing the regime, we see that it is growing weaker and weaker. Serzh Sargsyan is alarmed over the blows he received within a month's period. But the alarm is expected to intensify further. New processes are awaiting us in the coming months. There are good prerequisites for extraordinary elections," Zurabyan said.
According to him, the authorities are trying to "conclude a bargain" with Europeans.
"They try to avoid sanctions by releasing political prisoners but they will not do it before the New Year."
The HAK coordinator believes that the time to reconquer Liberty Square has matured.
