Armenia can benefit from “status quo”
Political scientist Hmayak Hovhannisyan does not exclude that a roadmap can be signed on the Karabakh conflict at the OSCE summit in Astana but he dos not think the roadmap will provide a rapid solution to the conflict.
The political expert thinks the conflict will not be settled until Russia and USA accept Artsakh's status as the lesser of two evils.
"Since Russia would not tolerate the presence of NATO peacekeeping forces in the liberated or, to say it in the language of NATO, in the "occupied" territories," said Mr. Hovhannisyan adding that Russia's position in the region is quite strong today.
To the question whether the maintenance of the status quo proceeds from Armenia's interests, Hmayak Hovannisyan said, "It opens positive opportunities for us as Armenian armed forces control the territory of Nagorno Karabakh which is a weighty advantage for Armenia to strengthen its position in the region."
"We can achieve positive results by improving the quality of governance through the status quo. But if we do not take any steps, maintenance of the status quo will give nothing to Armenia. I do not think that the issue of status quo hinders the development of Armenia," concluded the analyst
