NA appeals to international structures
Armenian parliamentary factions have addressed a letter to UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek, PACE President Mevlut Cavusoglu and OSCE PA President Petros Efthymiou.
"Parliamentary factions of the National Assembly of the Republic of Armenia strongly condemn the authorities of the Republic of Azerbaijan over the death of Manvel Saribekyan and require Azerbaijan to hold accountable all those guilty in Manvel Saribekyan's death in accordance with the 2nd and 3rd provisions of the European Convention on Human Rights, the Geneva conventions and the UN Convention on Harassments and Other Inhuman or Degrading Treatment and Punishment that it has ratified on December 10 in 1984," reads the letter.
They demand to involve Armenian law enforcers in the case study of Armenian captive and to bring those responsible to justice.
"We consider the official version of suicide raised by Azerbaijan as an attempt to avoid responsibility and exercise impunity because the citizen had signs of violation on this body before the death," they say in the letter.
Manvel Saribekyan, an Armenian shepherd, crossed the Azerbaijani border in search of his cattle. He was taken captive on September 11 and announced a subversive. After a few months of captivity in Azerbaijan, he reportedly committed suicide on Tuesday.
