Beer festival starts in Germany
The largest beer festival in the world, Oktoberfest, starts in Munich, Germany on Sept. 18.
5 680 000 liters of beer will be drunk during the festival this year.
Oktoberfest is an annual festival running from late September to early October. It is one of the most famous events in Germany and the world's largest fair, with some six million people attending every year.
The festival was first held on October 12, 1810. The original Fest was the celebration of a royal Bavarian wedding. Princess Teresa (Therese) of Bavaria (1792-1854) had married crown prince Ludwig I (later king of Bavaria) on the evening of October 12, 1810. The next day, the city began celebrating the wedding with various activities, including concerts, parties, balls, and even a horse race.
