Azerbaijani resolution carries no danger for Armenia
International law specialists Tigran Nahapetyan and Vladimir Vardanyan think the resolution on Karabakh submitted to the UN General Assembly by Azerbaijan represents no danger for Armenia. Moreover, Azerbaijan sites documents [namely the document on the Geneva Convention] which clearly indicate the right of nations to self-determination.
The Armenian specialists say UN resolutions are non-binding and have no legal force.
"From the political point of view, the resolution will affect the negotiation process. But on the whole, this is a weak resolution with its contents and format," said Vladimir Vardanyan.
Asked whether Azerbaijan can push the resolution into the UN Security Council, taking the advantage of Turkey's chairmanship, he said the UN SC can't consider the document as it's the OSCE Minsk Group dealing with the conflict settlement.
The international law specialists think that the resolution will at best be stored in "a UN drawer".
The UN General Assembly will discuss a draft resolution "The situation in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan" in a plenary meeting of Sept. 9.
