“The US is swallowing more delicately”
Commander of Shushi's separate squadron, member of the "Sardarabad" movement Jirair Sefilyan definitely doesn't appreciate the statement by the official Washington on extending the presence of the Russian military base in Gumri.
Sefilyan is certain that the official Washington doesn't believe that the Armenian-Russian agreement is solely the business of Russia and Armenia. "The U.S. is more delicate and effective in the policy on swallowing Armenia. The statement by the US State Department is merely diplomatic. Right after the collapse of the Soviet Union, one of the primary issues on the US's agenda was the elimination of Russian military forces in the republics that were gaining independence. The US managed to solve the issue in Azerbaijan and Georgia and now it's Armenia's turn," Sefilyan told "A1+".
As far as the Armenian-Russian agreement is concerned, Sefilyan is concerned. "The Armenian people believe that Armenia must collaborate with any political power based on the country's security, but Russia's urgency to sign the agreement is troubling."
According to Sefilyan, the reason why Russia urgently signed the agreement was that Russia doesn't trust Armenia's current authorities. "Russia doesn't trust Serzh Sargsyan and the authorities in Moscow are trying to get everything they can from Armenia. They have the energy sphere, are extending the timeframe for the presence of their military bases and they are winning."
Sefilyan is concerned that the Russians aren't waiting until the expiration of their agreement signed in 1995 and are extending it today. "The agreement on the allocation of Russian military bases in Gumri signed in 1995 will expire ten years from now." Sefilyan deems it necessary to warn the Russian authorities that any agreement signed by Serzh Sargsyan's regime cannot be a guarantee for a violation of that agreement. "Only the Armenian people can be the guarantee in Armenia."
