Assaults are not justified
Support A1+!The Center for Rights and Freedom issued a statement:
"Starting from May 28, a group of young supporters of the Armenian National Congress are making attempts to hold events at Freedom Square of Yerevan to protest against not giving airtime to "A1+", violating human rights in Armenia, assaults in the army, the release of political prisoners and tortures at penitentiaries. Without any legal or substantiated reasons, the police are not letting them enter the square and hold their protest.
It turns out that the police are applying force against citizens who have not committed any crimes. They are taking participants to police divisions and charging them with false accusations. Not only protesters, but journalists shedding light on the action are being subjected to unjustified assaults.
On May 31, police applied force against the protesters during their ensuing attempt to hold an event. Fifteen people, including journalists shedding light on the event, were arrested and taken to the police division. Three of them-journalist Ani Gevorgyan and activists David Kiramijyan and Sargis Gevorgyan-have been detained.
The Center for Rights and Freedom condemns the Armenian government's unjustified assaults. The center demands immediate release of the detainees and respect toward RA citizens' constitutional rights," as stated in the statement issued by the Center for Rights and Freedom (president, advocate Vardan Harutyunyan).
