«April 24 is a moral responibility»
The statement of the Armenian National Congress
"The year 1915 witnessed one of the grave crimes of human history - annihilation and deportation of Armenians in Western Armenia and Ottoman Turkey.
Armenians spread across the world have been commemorating the victims of April 24 since 1965.
Starting 1970s, the world began to denounce and recognize the Armenian Genocide relying on irrefutable facts and documents, as well as surveys of numerous researchers, historians and analysts. The recognition of the historic fact marked Armenia's victory over the Turkish propaganda machine denying the incontrovertible historic event.
For the first time in its history, Armenia commemorates the day in special conditions. The country's authorities have served the Genocide issue for their personal interests in an attempt to preserve their illegal power and ensure their reproduction.
The regime turned the issue into a subject of bargain trying to benefit from the process to the best advantage. In the result of their imprudent policy, the authorities agreed to the formation of a historians' commission to study the events of April 24, 1915.
From the very beginning, the Armenian National Congress disagreed to the commission questioning the Genocide issue.
We are convinced that we must commemorate the victims of 1915 not only with bows and emotional speeches but also with a great political, moral and national responsibility."
