The Assembly of Armenians of Europe (AAE) has issued a statement in connection with the 2nd anniversary of the tragic events of March 1, 2008.

"Similar to October 27, 1997 events, tragic events of March 1 shattered the will and spirit of Armenian people. March 1 events caused shock and disappointment among young generation of Diaspora Armenians, who witnessed atrocities against protest rally participants," reads the statement.

To overcome the grave situation in the country the AAE offers

• to establish an atmosphere of tolerance and solidarity in the country.

• to refrain from politicizing trials and immediately release the political prisoners detained on political motives.

• to undertake drastic measures to avoid repetition of similar events in the future.

• to establish supremacy of law in the country.

• to elaborate and put into effect a military programme of establishing social justice

• to eliminate economic privileges, to ensure free and fair competition

• To meet the demands of the Constitution and to distinguish between the activities of legislative, executive and judicial branches.

• to hold transparent and just elections in Armenia at the same time securing the access of respectable and intelligent citizens to the National Assembly and self-government bodies.

• To use new and modern approaches in the development of the country's economy and industry, to prevent foreign investments from beurocratic and oligarchic intervention.

• to secure dignified life for the country's residents.

The AAE calls on Armenians to support implementation of the aforesaid measures for the sake of national unity, free and happy life and Armenian statehood.
