Secretary of "Bargavach Hayastan" (Prosperous Armenia) faction Aram Safaryan was elected president of the parliamentary committee on human rights defense with 82 for and 0 against.

This position had remained vacant after Mkhitar Mnatsakanyan was appointed Minister of Social Security.

Aram Safaryan was nominated by leader of the Republican faction Galust Sahakyan, confirmed by "Bargavach Hayastan" member Vardan Bostanjyan and leader of Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law) Heghine Bisharyan. Aram Safaryan was the only candidate, which is why the vote was another unanimous vote.

Safaryan promised that he would be guided by 4 principles, including respect, cooperation, consistency and tolerance. "A hand extended will not remain unshaken," Aram Safaryan promised. He expressed gratitude to his political party for nominating him and then his coalition partners and promised: "You will not regret voting for me."

Aram Safaryan's election was held along with the National Assembly session during which deputies were going to discuss the draft law presented by the opposition for declaring the change made in the law on "Television and Radio" by the government on September 10, 2008.

Of course, all deputies left the hall and the discussion on the issue of "A1+" was held in an empty hall by the decision of the majority. This was the question that Stepan Safaryan asked Aram Safaryan. "At this moment, the right of the minority in parliament is being violated. How do you view that, future president of the committee on human rights defense?"

Aram Safaryan didn't consider the question to be correct and refused to answer. As a result of the 45-minute election, Aram Safaryan was unanimously elected president of the human rights defense committee and his fellow deputy, president of the committee on education and science Artak Davtyan presented Safaryan as a wonderful man, a brilliant expert and a great diplomat.

In his speech, Aram Safaryan took note that he was not planning for confrontation or competing against the Ombudsman. He added that he was going to have a clearly legislative function and that his objective was not going to be the protection of violated human rights.

According to him, there are serious issues in the field, but solving those issues was above his powers.
