One of the pivotal conditions
Statement by the "Heritage" party on the 1990 massacres in Baku
"The second half of January is a period of nightmares for all Armenians, especially Armenians from Baku. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the tragic events. On January 13-19, 1990, hundreds of Armenians were brutally killed and thousands were beaten and tortured on the streets, in public buses, homes and workplaces. Many of them died in hospitals. For one week, the psycho-terrorist actions perpetrated against the Armenians of Baku turned the Armenian-populated city into hell where the Armenians and their ancestors had lived, created and worked peacefully.
The one-week crime of ethnic cleansing perpetrated by the Azeri and that has not received an adequate political and legal evaluation led to the refuge of Baku Armenians from the Caspian Sea to Turkmenistan and then to Armenia, Russia, the USA and Europe. The Armenian refugee survivors lost all that they had-items and belongings. Another sector of Armenians was deprived of the city that had turned into a second homeland and the city that they had helped build and prosper.
Baku's anti-Armenian propaganda of violent massacres in Sumgait in February 1988, followed by the 1990 massacres in Baku and then in Gandzak, the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and the elimination of Armenian-populated residencies of Azerbaijan and aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh went to show that these were not accidental manifestations, but a state plan that was developed and organized by the government with the purpose to eliminate or exile the entire Armenian population of Soviet Azerbaijan through ethnic cleansing of a genocidal nature.
The "Heritage" party condemns the act that was organized by Azerbaijan and unpunished as a crime against Armenians and humanity and as the continuation of the genocide perpetrated in the early 20th century. We commemorate the victims of the massacres in Baku, support the Baku Armenian refugees who remember the sufferings and express gratitude to the countries that responded to the Armenians who survived the genocide. We express deep gratitude to Turkmenistan, Russia, the USA and European countries.
"Heritage" is certain that the Azerbaijan that subjected hundreds and thousands of Armenians to suffering, genocide, deprivations of homes and the Homeland will one day be brought to justice and be held responsible for what happened. That is one of the pivotal conditions for reconciliation, restoration of confidence, coexistence and friendly relations between Armenians and Azerbaijan."
