Charged with spying
The examination department of the RA National Security Service ended the preliminary investigation of the case on state treason, illegal procurement and maintenance of illegal weapons and ammunition. The prosecutor in charge of controlling the legality has confirmed the accusatory conclusion.
The preliminary investigation showed and corroborated that RA citizen, former Defense Ministry official G. Hayrapetyan had been enlisted by the Azeri Special Services and, based on his assignment, had gathered and transmitted information about the combativeness and defense of the RA Armed Forces, as well as certain materials for the purpose of spreading anti-Armenian propaganda.
G. Hayrapetyan received his last assignment from the Azeri Special Services on September 1, 2009 from citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran of Azeri nationality B. Bagheri who had arrived in Armenia. The photo of G. Hayrapetyan's friend, the Azeri Special Services official, served as a countersign of the meeting. G. Hayrapetyan had hosted B. Bagheri at his house and, receiving the subsequent assignment in an envelope, Hayrapetyan gave Bagheri materials that could have been used for spreading anti-Armenian propaganda. RA National Security Service officials revealed this after finding a cache placed in the bottom part of Bagheri's backpack during an inspection on the Meghri-Karchevan border passing point.
In addition, a weapon and ammunition were found during an inspection at G. Hayrapetyan's apartment.
Based on the evidence, RA citizen G. Hayrapetyan is charged with Part 1 of Article 299 of the RA Criminal Code (state treason through spying) and Part 1 of Article 235 (illegally procuring and keeping weapons and ammunition). Citizen of the Islamic Republic of Iran B. Bagheri is charged with Article 302 of the RA Criminal Code (spying that was done by a foreign citizen).
The criminal case has been sent to the first instance court of the Avan and Nor-Nork districts of Yerevan for examination, as reported by the press service of the Prosecutor General's office.
