Will Hatspanian be amnestied?
Sargis Hatspanian, a French-Armenian opposition activist and a hero of the Artsakh War, is still waiting for an answer by the Ministry of Justice.
Remind that some documents proving that Hatspanian was a Karabakh war veteran were to be submitted for defendant Hatspanian to be freed under the amnesty bill. Under the document the amnesty is applied to all detainees sentenced to five years' imprisonment who participated in liberalization wars.
Hatspanian's wife Hasmik Poghosian says they have sent to the Ministry the certificate of the military officer. Besides, NA Deputy Speaker Rudik Kushnunts and regiment commanders have sent letters confirming Hatspanian's participation in the wars.
A Yerevan court had sentenced Sargis Hatspanian to 3.5 years' imprisonment for false denunciation.
Sargis Hatspanian was arrested on November 3, 2008, in connection with his earlier interview with an opposition daily in which he claimed the head of state was a target of an imminent assassination attempt. The National Security Service instituted a criminal case on the basis of the publication in "Haykakan Zhamanak" on the hallmarks of a penal code article dealing with attempted assassinations of state officials.
Arsen Babayan, Spokesperson for the Justice Ministry's Department of Penitentiaries, says Sargis Hatspanian will be amnestied after the submitted documents are found compliant with the amnesty bill.
