Statement of the Armenian National Congress

"The regime's declaration of amnesty was not due to concerns about overcoming the political crisis in the country, much less an humanitarian act. The regime is guity for keeping innocent people in prison for a year and a half and those responsible will be brought to justice sooner or later. The release of most of the 51 political prisoners was a step that had to be taken and the result of the consistent and accurate policies of the Armenian National Congress, as well as the enduring and unbreakable struggle of the masses. This is the most purposeful victory of the Armenian National Congress for which we thank all participants of the pan-national movement.

The imprisonment of the movement's leaders and activists did not serve the regime's purpose to pressure and weaken the opposition's struggle. On the contrary, the regime faced a new front and its loss is clearly seen. Participating in the May 31 Yerevan mayor elections, the Armenian National Congress its influence as a political unit. It was thanks to that influence that the Council of Europe pressured the regime even more to release the political prisoners and led to the release of most of them.

The bandit regime was not able to use its last chance to create conditions for inter-political dialogue through the release of political prisoners and putting an end to persecutions. The regime proved that despite the loss, it refuses to look at the people as its enemy and the idea of continuing the war with no outcome. Thus, the Armenian National Congress will continue the struggle with new strength and enthusiasm for the release of the remaining political prisoners and the end of political persecutions. The Congress will also remain determined to demand the resignation of Serzh Sargsyan, establish a legitimate government through special presidential and parliamentary elections and restore constitutional order," as stated in the Armenian National Congress's statement.
