Greatest achievement
"The Foreign Affairs Ministry of Syria conceded a very suitable building for our embassy in Damascus," the RA Minister of Foreign Affairs Edward Nalbandyan said today as he presented this as a great achievement in relations between Armenia and the Syrian Arab Republic.
The Foreign Affairs Minister of the Syrian Arab Republic Ualid Musallim is currently in Yerevan. The joint press conference of both Foreign Affairs Ministers lasted 10 minutes during which it became clear that they had discussed issues relating to Turkish-Armenian relations and the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement.
Journalists asked Edward Nalbandyan to assess Azerbaijan's three anti-Armenian resolutions presented during the session of Foreign Affairs Ministers of Islamic countries, which was held in Damascus last week. In response, the RA Foreign Minister did not touch upon the possible effects for Armenia, but assessed Azerbaijan's policy on Nagorno-Karabakh.
"We can only repent that Azerbaijan's speculation of the conference and making the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict a religious issue led to the approval of those documents. These resolutions do not favor the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement or strengthening of stability and security. They hurt the current negotiations because they were approved based on false information and distort the essence of the conflict."
The Syrian Foreign Affairs Minister also expressed his view on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict settlement, mentioning that he has spoken with his Azeri counterpart about that issue.
"We find that there can be a peaceful settlement of the conflict and establishment of friendly ties through direct talks. Other ways of solving this issue will hurt the two countries and put regional peace and stability at risk."
After today's 10-minute conference, it became clear that the RA Foreign Affairs Minister is fluent in Arabic, while his Syrian counterpart only said "Barev dzez". The RA Foreign Minister left quickly after the conference and journalists did not get a chance to ask any more questions.
