Possible amnesty not exciting for ANC
Support A1+!"On the occasion of Independence Day on May 28, the President will make a statement on amnesty," Chairman of the National Assembly Hovik Abrahamyan told "Azatutyun" radio today.
Let us remind that at the beginning of the four-day session, Abrahamyan alluded that the issue concerning NA Deputies in prison would be solved.
"Believe me and trust me," said Abrahamyan.
The statements made by the NA Chairman were not too exciting for the Armenian National Congress.
"We'll talk when we see all political prisoners released," coordinator of the ANC central headquarters Levon Zurabyan told "A1+".
He also informed that the ANC expects nothing from the authorities.
"We are going to continue our struggle and the struggle continues because of the political prisoners. We are doing our job and let the authorities do their job."
Let us remind that by the demand of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE), the authorities made changes to Articles 225 and 300 of the Criminal Code. Although the PACE and the Armenian society were expecting to see the release of the opposition members arrested in relation to the events of March 1, they remain in prison.
Levon Zurabyan said that there is no need to respond to the question as to whether Serzh Sargsyan's May 28 amnesty will reflect upon the political prisoners or not.
"We are not interested in that. Sooner or later, the political prisoners are going to be released. Everything has come crushing down. Everyone, first and foremost the authorities, know that the political prisoners are innocent and that they are in prison due to the orders of the authorities. If the authorities decide to declare amnesty, it goes to say that they also accept that the cases brought up against the prisoners were failed," Mr. Zurabyan told "A1+". According to him, the authorities are currently faced with the issue of keeping their image and keep the best men of the opposition in jail during the election campaign.
