"Avan is orientated," representatives of the Republican Party of Armenia (HHK) welcomed the members of the Armenian National Congress (HAK) with the words.

On May 10, HHK representatives hindered HAK members to inform local residents of a May 13 meeting with the Congress candidate.

"Yesterday HAK representatives divided into two groups and distributed booklets with women. Just at that moment a woman was reported to have been beaten up. We went and saw everything with our eyes," says Levon Eghiazaryan, the head of HAK's pre-election office of Avan.

He had talked to the HHK representatives. "I recognised two of them. One heads HHK's youth wing of Avan and the other is the son of HHK MP Vazgen Karakhanyan. They calmed us down saying everything was all right, it was a mere misunderstanding. Later we were told that our friends had appeared in the same situation. They had been chased by 25-30 men who railed at the Congress members and grasped their booklets."

"Avan is out district and the one who dares to go against us will be punished-be it a woman, a child or someone else. If we catch anyone with Levon's flier we shall break his legs," said Republican members.

Levon Eghiazaryan had a telephone talk with HHK Spokesman Edward Sharmazanov. The latter excluded Vazgen Karakhanyan's son's participation in the fuss.

The HAK has already appealed to the RoA Prosecutor General, Police, Human Rights Ombudsman with a demand to institute an action and punish the wrongdoers.

The HAK also gave the names of beaten women.

The coordinator of the HAK's Central Office, Levon Zurabyan says the events speak of HHK's imagination of democracy. "We shall do our best to conduct a fair and legitimate election."
