AUTHORITIES DISGRACE THEMSELVES

Politics

Today the Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners ran into another obstacle. The Committee was forbidden to hold an event regarding the problems of Armenian political problems at the Tekeyan Centre.

“We made an arrangement with the Centre administration ten days ago and got their verbal consent to hold the event inside the building. Then we received their written consent. Today at about 10.30-11.00 they refused to give us a hall,” member of the Committee for the Protection of Political Prisoners Vardan Harutyunyan told the people gathered at the entrance of the Tekeyan Centre today.

The representative of the Centre, Levon Tadevosyan, told the Committee that the pipes of the central hall had blown up.

“We went upstairs to see the blown pipes ourselves. But the hall was dry, no pipe had burst out,” continued Mr. Harutyunyan. He is convinced that the centre was forced to refuse the Committee.

Note that before turning to the Tekeyan Centre the Committee had been refused by ten other organisations but none of them accounted for their refusal.

This behaviour is characteristic of tyranny. We are no more taken aback by their steps. We shall be consistent and continue our struggle by the time we win a final victory. Sooner or later this regime will collapse,” said Committee member Jirayr Sefilyan.

Note that before the arrival of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Thomas Hammarber,g Jirayr Sefilyan said that Armenia shouldn't rely on international structures.

I have nothing against Hammarberg. I am confident that he is well aware of the shameful situation reigning in Armenia but he is not independent. The same Europe pretending to be “humane” overlooks us. Europe has always been and is still deceitful to its values,” said Sefilyan.

Unlike Sefilyan, Alexandre Arzumanyan's spouse, Melissa Brown, confides in Hammarberg and is content with his recent press conference.

“I became convinced that Mr. Hammarberg is well aware of the events in Armenia. Although the Prosecutor General and other officials misinformed him, Hamamrberg can distinguish between white and black. Armenian authorities disgrace themselves.”

“TEKEYAN CENTRE IS AN OCCUPIED TERRITORY”

“The authorities used to speak of occupied territoties and we spoke of liberated ones. Today we are here to liberate the Tekeyan Centre and to expand the liberated territories. The Tekeyan Centre is an occupied territory today. This is an important fact. There are already some occupied territories at the heart of our capital, near the Opera House, which should be liberated,” said film director Tigran Khzmalyan.

“ARMENIA LACKS A THIRD POWER”

Advocate Hovik Arsenyan who was to make a speech during today's event at the Tekeyan Centre presented the key issues of his report.

“I am convinced that Hammarberg will give a full estimation to Armenian political prisoners and their state but I doubt that the Council of Europe may take his report for granted.

Hovik Arsenyan notes that people have been prosecuted long before the March 1 events. Arrests have started since October 23, 2007, after placing flies notifying about opposition rallies.

“Today our officials want to eliminate the consequences of March 1 but none of them pays attention to their motives and causes,” says Hovik Arsenyan who doesn't believe that anyone will be brought to justice in connection with the March 1 unrest. I would like to mention that our authorities do nothing to ensure public harmony in Armenia.

“I cannot describe my disappointment at Armenian courts. Once I used to be a hopeless optimist but today I announce that Armenia lacks a third power-judicial system. I announce officially that Armenian courts do not pass sentences,” he said.
