CO-CHAIRS TO ARRIVE IN REGION

Politics

According to a preliminary arrangement in Vienna, the Minsk group Co-Chairs will arrive in the region at the turn of next week.

“Our next step is to arrive in the region at the end of next week and consult with the presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan over turning the new momentum of the peaceful resolution of the Karabakh conflict into a final elaboration of main principles. Then, in December, we shall attend the sitting of the OSCE Ministerial Council in Helsinki to see whether we have achieved any progress with the FMs of the two countries and arrange the next meeting of the two presidents,” said U.S Co-Chair Matthew Bryza.

“Naturally, I mean to say that the next meeting of the Presidents will take place either in December or in January as I am from the Bush administration and cannot predict what might happen after January 20.”

The U.S. Co-Chair noticed great progress after the Moscow meeting of the Presidents of Armenia and Azerbaijan. “Firstly, an atmosphere of mutual respect and confidence was established. Secondly, the Presidents seem to finally overcome the divergence over the main principles.”

“The Moscow meeting, though prepared long in advance in a bilateral way, Russia-Armenia, Russia-Azerbaijan, nevertheless is in the framework in the Minsk Group Co-Chair countries' efforts of mediation. The Madrid talks lie at the heart of the negotiations, and we, the Ch-Chairs, simply need to help the Presidents reach final agreement,” noted Bryza.
