IMPRISONED FOR SHOUTING “LEVON”
Support A1+!Today the Criminal Court of Appeal affirmed the decision of Yerevan Criminal Court concerning Karen Tarkhanian’s case on 1 March events. Tarkhanian is accused under Article 225. As the accusation says, he has been raining curses on policemen and distributing clubs to protesters.
Yerevan Criminal Court sentenced him to four years’ imprisonment.
Zara Budaghian, Defender of Karen Tarkhanian, applied to the Court of Appeal with the request to allow new witnesses into the case, such as MPs of the “Heritage” faction Zaruhi Postanjian, Armen Martirossian, Anahit Bakhshian, Vardan Khachatrian, as well as Tarkhanian’s mother Hasmik Zakinian. However, the court rejected the claim declaring it groundless.
Zara Budaghian stated that Tarkhanian had been on his way to the fair when he met the crowd at the French Embassy and had to stand on the lorry to find his mother in the crowd.
“Why were you shouting “Levon” then?” the Judge asked. “Everyone did,” answered Tarkhanian.
Listening to both parties the Judge announced that the decision remained unchanged.
