“PEOPLE HAVEN'T MADE THEIR CHOICE YET”

Politics

Former presidential contender Arman Melikian thinks that Armenia’s leadership will hardly implement PACE Resolution 1609. He says that the political prisoners should be set free as most of them are imprisoned for their political dissent. While the authorities think that once the political activists are released they will upset the country's interior political situation.

Arman Melikian says no side won the presidential election. “The authorities do not enjoy public confidence which puts their legitimacy in the international domain under question. Unlike the authorities, the opposition turned out to be mighty and patient. They still keep the political sphere tense. And though the Central Election Commission publicizes the outcome of the election, people haven't made their choice yet,” he said.

The former presidential contender says the coalition hampers the country's further prosperity and it must be dissolved as soon as possible. “The coalition was simply formed to recognise the legitimacy of the presidential election.”

Arman Melikian has got no invitation to participate in the formation of a public council and he doesn't want the so-called council to create an illusion among people. He doesn't think the council might surmount the crisis in the country. “A political dialogue can be fostered between political forces only over social issues,” he said.

Melikian says the authorities realise the seriousness of the moment and take efforts either to change the political situation radically or to gain time. Under the given circumstances the opposition should try to increase tension to weaken and split the authorities. This will enable the opposition to come to power.
