40 DAYS LATER

Politics

Under RA Constitution, Armenia’s President-Elect Serzh Sarkissian will assume office on April 9 by swearing in during a special sitting of the National Assembly to be convened at the National Academic Theatre of Opera and Ballet after Alexander Spendiarian. Official Yerevan shares no effort to make the ceremony spectacular. One can come across policemen in all central streets of the capital. Besides, the main roads leading to the Opera House are closed even for pedestrians. All these measures are taken not to “spoil” today’s glamourous ceremony.

To remind, it is already forty days since the death of the victims of the March 1 bloody events. The victims’ relatives and a number of civic organizations are expected to honour the victims’ memory today with candle lighting. They will also voice protest against the authorities who have neither declared a day of mourning, nor delayed the inauguration.

Eight people died during the events of March 1,

Zakar Hovhannissian

Hamlet Tadevossian

Gor Kloyan

David Petrossian

Tigran Khachatrian

Grigor Gevorgian

Hovhannes Hovhannissian

Armen Farmanian

They all passed away at an early age. They were full of life and aspirations which, unfortunately, remained unrealized.

The moment Serzh Sarkissian swears an oath on the Constitution and Bible, incense will be burnt on the tombs of the March 1 victims.
