WE LACK THAT CULTURE

Politics

Ruzan Khachatryan, the Spokesperson of the “People's Party of Armenia” told “A1+” that women were not nominated in Armenia, since we lacked that culture. She expressed this viewpoint during the “Demand of the RA women in political participation and problems for its implementation” conference organized by the Left Feminist party of Sweden and the “People’s Party of Armenian”.

The “People’s Party of Armenian” has conducted surveys among 400 students, to find out whether there is a demand of women at the NA, Government and presidential office. 50 percent of respondents consider that it is more important to correspond to the post irrespective of gender.

The surveys were divided into three parts – Local Self-Governmental, NA and presidential elections. “We have good results in regard with the NA, since there are precedents and people see that women work properly and want to raise their number. As to the Local Self-Governmental elections, 30 percent of respondents consider that they want to see women leaders, while 40 percent do not mind to have both men and women leaders”, presented Ruzan Khachatryan and added that very few people want to have a woman president. “Since we have no precedent”, was the explanation. “Myths that voters do not vote for women is in the past. Women do not want to participate in the elections, since their husbands are against it”, pointed out Nora Hakobyan, Head of the “Republican” party’s Council.

Ruzan Khachatryan added: “A community, an enterprise or a state should be headed by a smart, intelligent and a decent person, who carries universal values. Why a woman cannot be such an individual? We should give the public the opportunity to choose a man or a woman who carries such values, while we always propose men of various qualities”.
