“WE SHOULD GET RID OF THE ACTING AUTHORITIES AT ANY RATE”

Today the National Democratic Union (AZhM) named AZhM leader Vazgen Manukian for the presidential elections. The nomination was endorsed unanimously by the National Democratic Alliance (AZhK), National Democratic Party (AZhK) and the “National State” Party (leader Samvel Shahinian).

The most difficult step, nomination, is made. Becoming a president is much easier. In Armenia it is as easy as falling off a log, Vazgen Manukian said in a joke.

Hrant Khachatrian, the leader of the Constitutional Rights Union (SIM) welcomed the AZhM decision at the current phase.

ARF Dashnaktsutiun member Armen Rustamian, OYP deputy chairman Mher Shahgeldian, Heritage Party secretary Vardan Khachatrian made speeches highlighting the AZhK’s contribution to the country’s political life. Vardan Khachatrian underlined the ideological similarities between the two parties.

The AZhK sitting was attended by representatives of all parties with the exception of the Armenian Pan-National Movement (HHSh), Republican Party (HHK) and Prosperous Party (BHK).

“We shall share our opinion after nominations for presidency are officially finished. The HRAK will convene a sitting at mid-January to decide which candidate to back,” Samvel Babayan said.

In answer to the question which presidential aspirant the ARFD will second at the second round if not elected, Armen Rustamian said, “We shall consider two important factors. Firstly, whether the election was fair, just and transparent and secondly, we shall focus on ideological and strategic similarities.”

AZhK leader Vazgen Manukian criticized the acting authorities in his addressing speech. “The elections of 1996 and 1998, the parliamentary carnage of October 27, 1997, and the elections of 2003 and 2007 are closely connected. Our main task is to get rid of the acting authorities at any cost,” he said.

The presentees proposed Vazgen Manukian as an alternative to the present and former authorities. Vazgen Manukian is the only person capable of uniting all forces concerned over Armenia’s future well-being, they stated.
