“TURKEY IS STILL PERPETRATING GENOCIDE”

Politics

“Genocide” is defined as a physical and cultural massacre perpetrated against people. Judging by the definition of the word we can state that Turkey still commits genocide against Armenians,” Samvel Karapetian, the head of the “Research of Armenian Architecture” Centre said during a two-day summit dedicated to the 40th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide.

Samvel Karapetian condemns Turkey's steps and is astonished by the fact that Turkey is eager to enter the European family. “Official Turkey still refutes the genocides of 1894-96 and 1915-18 well-planned beforehand. Moreover, the country is doing its utmost to get rid of the monuments testifying to the events in Western Armenia,” Karapetian added.

Samvel Karapetian paid a visit to western Armenia to study Armenian monuments. He summarized the results of the study in a report titled “Armenian Historical Monuments Yesterday and Today.”

Karapetian reminded that most Armenian memorials are in Turkey, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Iran today. The countries deliberately destroy our monuments with the exception of Iran. Samvel Karapetian confirmed his opinion presenting a few documents.

“In 1912 Turkey’s Government assigned the Armenian patriarchate to make a list of the Armenian churches and monasteries. The latter took the order and listed 2200 Armenian churches and monasteries. During the Great Genocide the Turkish Government carried out a policy of exiling and annihilating Armenians living in Turkey. Concurrently, they began destroying Armenian cultural monuments.”

They wanted to inhabitate Western Armenia occupied November 22, 1920, with Turks.
