Armenia’s first President Levon Ter-Petrossian took Prime Minister Serzh Sarkissian’s advice and apologized to the Armenian people.

“I stumbled while bringing Serzh Sarkissian and Kocharian from Karabakh. And now I ask you for help to recover my mistake,” Ter-Petrossian said.

“Seeing the latest steps by Robert Kocharian and Serzh Sarkisian, I am increasingly convinced that I need to repent and ask for absolution,” he told about 20,000 people who gathered in the city’s Liberty Square. “Therefore, I belatedly but sincerely apologize to you for bringing Robert Kocharian and Serzh Sarkissian to Armenia and foisting them upon you.”

“If I made mistakes in my staffing policy -- and I really did -- this is the biggest one. In fact, this is not a mistake but a disaster which I inflicted on our people. So help me rid you of that disaster,” he added, drawing cheers from the crowd.

He called on the oppositionists to unite and combat the acting authorities with joint efforts.

The RA former president had met with party leaders and shared his concern over the country’s political scene. In case their plans work, Levon Ter-Petrossian will resign office in three years’ time and call free and fair elections.

“None of the HHSh members seeks power. I shall be nominated by a political initiative,” Ter-Petrossian said.

Ter-Petrossian recalled “the dark and cold” years of 1992 and 1994 and reminded that the war was waged on 9 May, 1992 and the ceasefire regime was established on 12 May, 1994.

Citing NKR President Robert Kocharian’s letters of 1995 and 1996, Ter-Petrossian proved that Armenia’s financial and energy potential was directed to the maintenance of the Karabakh status and victory.

Afterwards, Ter-Petrossian apologized to the Armenians for the inconveniences caused during the Artsakh war.
